This week in math we will be finishing up our statistics unit. After reviewing on Monday and Tuesday, students will take the Quarter 3 benchmark test on Wedneday. Thursday and Friday will be spent on graphing statistics and making conclusions based on the data and graphs. Tutoring from 4:00-4:45 on Wednesday afternoon in my classroom if you want your child to attend! Science This week in science, students will be learning about plate tectonics, plate boundaries, earthquakes/mountain building/volcanoes, etc. Heavy note-taking will occur on Monday and Tuesday along with some illustrative videos. We will have a quiz on Wednesday (maybe Thursday) and students will take the Quarter 3 benchmark test on Friday. Watch both of these videos on continental drift. Watch the video below on the lithosphere and asthenosphere - it's short, so feel free to watch it more than once if you're struggling to understand the concept.

This week in math, we'll be continuing our unit on probability. We'll be focusing on experimental vs. theoretical probability, independent vs. dependent events, and using simulations to predict possible outcomes. A quiz will be given on Thursday over simple and compound probability (two separate grades) after we review on Tuesday/Wednesday, and another quiz will be given on Friday over the previously-mentioned new standards. Science This week in science will start off with VSVS lessons for all three classes. We pick back up on Tuesday with an introduction to the layers of the earth. Students will be required to work in pairs on laptops to overcome my current lack of a projector - have your child bring headphones/earbuds to school this week if they don't already. A quiz on the layers of the Earth will be given Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how fast we cover the material. We will finish out the week with an intro to plate tectonics. Below is the link for the Advanced Course Application. If you are interested in having your child placed in advanced classes in 8th grade, this is the first step! Monday will be spent finishing and reviewing the study guide for the percents unit test. Students have already been given their study guides - I would highly recommend going over it with them at some point this weekend. The unit test is on Tuesday. Starting Wednesday, students will take a pretest on probability, and we will begin that unit the same day. Science The first quiz of our new unit on rocks and minerals will be on Tuesday. Students will need to know how to read a chart to identify certain minerals (this is a 5th grade skill and the question on the quiz is very easy), know when a mineral looks like it has fracture vs. when it has cleavage, how to rule out solids that are NOT considered minerals, and be able to define "streak." This is a 4-question test, so missing even 1 question will result in a C, missing 2 will be an F. Have your child study our recent notes on mineral qualities over the weekend if possible, and definitely on Monday night. We will begin our lessons on rocks starting Wednesday. Math
This week in math we'll be continuing our unit on percents by focusing on multiple ways to calculate markups/tax/tip and discount. For example - finding the total cost of an $80 jacket with a 15% discount - instead of multiplying 80 by 0.15 and subtracting the answer from 80, students will need to know that they can simply multiply 80 by 0.85. Similarly, instead of calculating 20% tip and 7.5% tax on a bill of $23.65 with multiple steps (multiplying and adding), students will be able to complete it in one step by multiplying $23.65 by 1.275. Quiz on Friday. Science After a final day of project work time on Monday, students will present their genetic disorders group projects starting on Tuesday. As soon as every group has presented (this might stretch into Wednesday), I will pass out the study guide for the summative unit assessment on heredity, which will be given on Friday. Our next unit, which is on rocks and minerals, will begin with a pretest next Monday. Math
This week in math we will be starting our new unit on percents. We will begin with reviewing how to write percents as decimals and vice versa, and then move on to finding the percent of a number (ex. what is 37% of 54?). This concept gets extended later in the week when we begin to use proportions to solve word problems involving percents. Expect a quiz on Friday! Science This week in science we will be continuing our unit on heredity. We will be tackling the standard that requires students to differentiate between sexual and asexual reproduction. The process of meiosis (sex cell division) will be taught early in the week, with an emphasis on why sex cells must be divided twice (as opposed to once during mitosis). We will then move on to the three ways that organisms can reproduce asexually and compare the DNA of their offspring with the DNA of offspring who were produced sexually. Quiz on Friday. Math
This week in math we will be finishing our unit on proportionality. Monday is our final lesson on using proportions to solve scale factor problems. Tuesday will be spent completing a study guide for the exam, which will be given on Wednesday. Thursday is set aside for retakes - students should come to me to see what assignments they are missing in order to complete them to be eligible for retakes. Make sure your child looks through their binder/folder/backpack/locker to locate any tests that they will want to retake - having the original document is necessary! Science This week in science we will be continuing our studies on genetics by completing part 2 of the webquest from last week, as well as a text dive for further understanding of alleles, traits, genes, genotype/phenotype, and the early studies of Mendel. A short quiz will be given on Wednesday, with various questions on Monday and Tuesday's bellringer serving as a study guide. I'm encouraging all students to bring their bellringers home for review purposes each day. Thursday is set aside for retakes - students should come to me to see what assignments they are missing in order to complete them to be eligible for retakes. Make sure your child looks through their binder/folder/backpack/locker to locate any tests that they will want to retake - having the original document is necessary! |
