I hope you all had a restful snow break! This week will look just like last weeks' post because we missed the whole week of instruction.Students will use the distributive property to factor a linear expression with and without rational coefficients. This helps to build procedural skill with the distributive property. Students understand what it looks like to use the sum or difference as a factor. This work develops students' understanding that the distributive property holds for any expression, even those with rational number coefficients and unknown values. At the end of the week we will move into solving one step addition and subtraction equations. They will build procedural skill with two-step equations. This work develops students' understanding that performing operations to both sides of an equation preserves the equality of the two expressions. Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (look for and make use of structure) as they check if numbers are solutions to an equation, and once an equation is solved that each step of solving has the same solution as the previous step. Key vocabulary:
The Math Mania will be given on Wednesday but will not be due until Friday February 5th, because it will cover both addition/subtraction AND multiplication/division one step equations, which will not be taught until the beginning of next week. Comments are closed.
