This week we will continue on with variable expressions by understanding that equivalent expressions always have the same value. Their prior knowledge is extended to expressions that include rational numbers as students identify more complicated equivalent expressions such as percent problems and problems that include translating the distributive property. A conceptual challenge students may encounter is thinking that the appearance of rational numbers will change when expressions are equivalent. The concept is developed through work with expressions, which allows students to experiment with the expressions and justifying why two expressions are equivalent.
This work helps students deepen their understanding of operations because we can use the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. Students engage in Mathematical Practice 3 (construct viable arguments) as they justify their choices for which expressions are equivalent Key vocabulary:
We will be using more technology based assessments in class as we get closer to the TNReady tests. (Part 1 of the Mathematics will be on February 18th. We will be using a great online testing interface called SchoolNet which can be accessed from anywhere. Students are very familiar with this interface, as they have used it to take the district benchmark tests, as well as test for Math class. I wanted to provide you with the link so you and your child can view any daily assessments given in my class that your child has completed. It is a great way to review concepts. https://nashville.schoolnet.com/Authentication.aspx?mode=login They will use their username and login that they have been using all year. Comments are closed.
