Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope all of you had a beautiful and peaceful holiday break. We will start the third quarter off by finding the meaning of the expressions that model an algebraic approach to problem solving.
It will help to build procedural skill with translating mathematical expressions. Students are presented with variable expressions related to a real-world scenario. They define each expression using the context of the situation. This work develops students' understanding that an algebraic approach to problem solving looks at the relationships between the quantities and uses variables, numbers, and operations to describe the relationships. Students engage in Mathematical Practice 4 (Model with mathematics) as they relate each expression to what it models in the real-world scenario. Different variations of the mathematical expressions are used to extend their understanding of what each expression models in a specific context. |
