This week we are moving on to our new unit, Integers! We will begin slowly, by defining what an integer is, and working with absolute values. The notion of absolute values will be invaluable when we start doing integer operations using the "rules" technique. But long before we get to that, we will begin looking at addition of integers using concrete models. The number line and the chip method. We will be looking at a task that relates to football which uses real-world context of running in opposite directions on a quasi-number line to understand positive and negative numbers that sum to zero. We will then use that knowledge of "opposites" to model addition of integers with the chip method. This will all help us define a very important vocabulary word, zero pairs.
