Hello. This week we are working with a few different short human rights/social consciousness/civic duty themed passages with a focus on text analysis, critical thinking, and TN Ready test prep. There will be no tests this week. I gave so many graded assignments recently that I am still catching up on entering grades into Infinite Campus.
The new vocabulary focus is on Greek and Latin roots. Students should already have a copy of the roots upon which they will be eventually assessed.
Thanks - JN
Hello, everyone. This past week the students produced a How To brochure inspired by an old-school Citizenship Guide for Young People. They also wrote a compare and contrast piece on William Blake's "The Lamb" and "The Tyger." Finally they read, analyzed, and answered text-dependent questions on the Preamble to the United Nations' Declaration of Human Rights.
This coming Wednesday students will take a test involving identifying the meaning of and utilizing prefixes. Students received this list of prefixes over a week ago, and I gave them a practice test at the end of this past week.
We will continue to read, annotate and analyze short complex texts as we seek to improve reading comprehension and writing skills in preparation for whatever TN Ready throws at us. That's all for now. Thanks - JN
By now, all Animal Farm packets are turned in, all presentations have been made, and we are ready to proceed with a new unit. If you have a child who has not done well on OR has missed one of the first couple of assessments, the time for re-takes/make-ups is fleeting as we move forward into new material.
Our IB focus will be on Human Rights, and we will be reading and writing about various issues pertaining to that focus. Ultimately, students will have to write a Compare & Contrast essay about two previously discussed texts of their choosing.
For this unit's vocabulary studies, we will focus on word parts: affixes and Greek & Latin roots. First, students will be required to memorize the meanings of prefixes and provide words that use those prefixes. The prefix test will be a week from this Monday. Thanks - JN
Students did a lot of research and project design last week, so the ANIMAL FARM packet being turned in by Friday was pushing it. However, starting Monday, I should be seeing them come in. I will begin grading them this week.
Monday, students will present their research to the class. Everyone is expected to participate with a speaking part during the presentations.
We will start a new unit in the next few days. No novel for this one. We'll cover many shorter passages. Students will be writing a compare and contrast essay about two of the texts that we cover.
WE will wrap up AF this week with academic conversations and a short essay test.
That's all for now. Thanks - JN
