The vocabulary test, on the words from the previous post, is Monday.
This week, we begin a new unit on Walter Dean Myers' The Glory Field. Persuasive writing is still a focus. Students will participate in a debate as a part of the formal assessment for this unit.
Projects from last weeks' How To mini-unit are due ASAP. I'd like them all in by Tuesday.
If your child has not recited the Maya Angelou quote for me, yet, then please encourage her or him to do so soon. Thanks for checking in.

We are beginning our week long mini-unit on How-To informational writing. I am in the middle of grading journals and have nearly finished grading all the late essays. Some students have yet to turn in the persuasive essay, so please confirm the completion of this assignment with your child.
For their HOW TO assessment, students will begin to work on an instructional video or audio clip.
Clearly, due to recent weather, we are a little behind. This week, we will take the final Animal Farm test. It will occur Wednesday. I will be grading students' annotations on the novel as well, this week. They should have taken notes on all ten chapters.
I'm still working on the new vocabulary list.
We will review the last benchmark assessment before the end of the week, in order to better prepare for the next benchmark and TN Ready.
Finally, I will introduce the new mini-unit on HOW TO writing, using a chapter from How to Win Friends and Influence People as our anchor text.
Following the mini-unit, we will begin the next IB unit using Walter Dean Myers' novel, The Glory Field.
Howdy, everybody. Pretty much everyone's persuasive essay should be done by now. Students were instructed to email them to me over the next couple of days after making any tweaks suggested during the peer editing phase. I will begin grading them. Any student who wishes to improve his or her grade may do so after sitting down with me and discussing the essay.
We've just about come to the end of Animal Farm. There will be a test on the second half of the novel around Thursday. The second vocabulary quiz from the novel will occur Tuesday.
I will be grading journals/notebooks this coming week, as well. I expect to see all 10 chapters of Animal Farm annotated in their journals. This is a big part of the grade.
The next novel is The Glory Field by Walter Dean Myers. You may remember we were to read it last semester, but that it was bumped for A Christmas Carol. Now it's back. If you can buy a copy for your child, that's great. We do have some copies at the school. Before we begin the novel, I will teach a mini-unit on "How To" writing. We will be using a chapter from How To Win Friends & Influence People as our anchor text. I will provide copies of the chapter.
Thanks for checking in! - Joe Nettles
